Tattoo Removal FAQs

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snap against the skin. We offer advice on numbing options to help make treatments more comfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on factors such as the size, colour, depth, and age of the tattoo, as well as your skin type. Most tattoos require multiple treatments spaced several weeks apart.

Use our calculator to find out more.

Can all tattoo colours be removed?

Modern laser technology allows us to treat most tattoo colours, although some pigments may require more sessions than others.

How long between treatments?

Treatments are typically spaced 6–8 weeks apart to allow your skin to heal and your body to process the ink particles.

Do you offer consultations?

Yes — we offer a free tattoo consultation where we assess your tattoo and discuss your personalised treatment plan.

Are there any side effects?

Temporary redness, swelling, or mild blistering may occur after treatment. These reactions are normal and usually settle within a few days when aftercare instructions are followed.

What should I do before my appointment?

Avoid sun exposure before treatment and ensure the skin is clean and free of fake tanning products two weeks prior to treatment.

If using numbing cream, apply it about two hours before your appointment, wrap area in plastic / glad wrap so the cream doesn't dry out and we will remove it in the studio. You can purchase numbing cream in the studio or online.

What should I do after laser tattoo removal?

After your treatment, the area may feel similar to a mild sunburn. For the first 24–48 hours, avoid heavy sweating, spas, saunas, and swimming pools. Keep the area out of direct sunlight and follow the aftercare instructions provided. Applying a soothing cream such as Savlon or Bepanthen can help support healing.

Do you offer laser tattoo removal in Hamilton / Waikato?

Erase Laser Studio is based in Morrinsville, conveniently located just 15 minutes from Hamilton, Cambridge, and surrounding Waikato towns, making it easy for clients across the region to access professional laser tattoo removal.

Do you work with tattoo artists for cover-ups?

Yes. Laser tattoo removal is often used to lighten existing tattoos before a cover-up, making it easier for tattoo artists to create new artwork.

Rather than removing a tattoo completely, many clients only need a few sessions to fade the ink enough for their artist to work with. This collaboration gives tattoo artists greater flexibility and helps achieve a much better final result.
